Requiem For Protest is dedicated to Eel, co-founder of Defend Our Juries, who we lost on Sunday 5 July 2026.

Their parting words

Dear everyone, (all you wonderful activist folks), this is just a little note to say thank you. Since getting involved in activism I’ve met the best people, and that’s where the hope is really, even as the world gets darker - in all the people making small organisations & groups & projects; protecting people & environment, building bridges & community, sounding the alarm, opposing genocide.

I found that with quite a lot of protest there were often so many difficult decisions about what the right thing is to do - so many complicated moral dilemmas - and that was always the hardest and the scariest part of everything, but the bit that never felt complicated and was just simply good was meeting the people who were involved each time.

So yes - thank you - I really appreciate everyone I have met in this network (and so many that I haven’t!) I have not told many people much about what has been going on with this cancer business, because things have kept sort of escalating - and not that long ago I had thought I might be back to things before too long, so I’m really sorry if I didn’t manage to let you know. And thank you so much to everyone who wrote to me during this past year or so - I treasured your message, and I hope I managed to reply but please forgive me if I didn’t - sometimes I get a bit paralysed about messages and letters because they seem hard to get right when they’re important.

Sending lots of love and strength and hope,
Eel
